Cllr Tim Leaman, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Kingsweston ward, has written a letter to the Bristol Post urging the mayor to invest in public toilet facilities in the area.
He said:
The Mayor has previously announced that there is £3.9 million available this year to be spent on services within the city. Many of my residents in Coombe Dingle, Lawrence Weston and Sea Mills have said that they would welcome future investment in public toilets facilities. They are a much needed facility. It is just common sense that people who are travelling to shops in the area may need a public convenience.
Yes, the council needs to make savings, but there are alternative ways of saving money and some of the Mayor’s priorities are not in line with what is best for residents in my ward. There are some very basic services which must be guaranteed. Public toilets are just such facilities which must be safeguarded. Although the consultation on how to spend the £3.9m is now closed, the one-off pot is evidence that the Mayor can afford to put investment behind this appeal if he chose to do so.
The lack of access to any amenable facilities nearby has caused problems for residents on many occasions. The Mayor must therefore listen to what local people feel is right for their communities. Is it really too much to ask that we finally get access to a public toilet?
